Located between the former industrial area of Lingotto and the Po River in the south-east area of Turin, Italy, Enrico Fermi Secondary School occupies a 1960s building complex which has been given a new lease of life by local architectural firm BDR bureau. The winning entry of an international competition, the project has transformed the former mundane modernist three-storey building into a neighbourhood landmark with two subtle yet game-changing gestures: by adding an inhabited envelope and the use of a single colour for the entire exterior. Representing more than just an architectural makeover however, the renovation reinforces the secondary school’s central role in the local community through integrating a series of services such as a gym and a library as an extension of the public space, thereby further brandishing the school’s social, cultural and pedagogical role.
